Monday began with a Symposia session designed to help students better understand the ISEF judging process. This year’s event includes 1,381 projects and 1,725 finalists representing approximately 60 countries, regions, and territories. More than 700 Grand Award Judges across 22 categories, along with over 40 Special Awards Organisations, will collectively present more than US$8 million in awards, prizes, and scholarships.
Students received valuable guidance on how to communicate their research effectively: provide a concise overview of the problem, approach, results, and impact of the project; be clear and engaging; remain adaptable; and approach judging as a conversation rather than a formal presentation.
Armed with these insights, students returned to their project displays to continue refining and practising their project conversations with chaperones and fellow finalists. The support and encouragement our students are providing one another is a wonderful example of collaborative science in action.
We were also thrilled to see members of the Australian team attracting media attention. Science News photographed and interviewed Jayashruthi and Lucy, while Georgia participated in a video interview with Education Outreach. Keep an eye on the ISEF website in the coming weeks, where Georgia is expected to feature in the Education Outreach section, helping to inspire the next generation of young scientists and engineers.
With all students successfully passing their display and safety inspections, the team headed into the Opening Ceremony reinvigorated and excited for the days ahead. Students heard inspiring reflections and advice from distinguished speakers including Maya Ajmera, Barbara M. Barrett, Craig Barrett, and George D. Yancopoulos. Their collective message strongly resonated with our students: curiosity, passion, grit, and responsibility are essential ingredients for success, and science pursued with passion and rigour has the power to change the world. Australia and New Zealand featured prominently in both the official shout outs and the behind-the-scenes “Meet the Finalists” showcase. Our finalists proudly carried the artwork they created yesterday onto the stage, representing Australia alongside students from around the world.
The energy, professionalism, and enthusiasm shown by our finalists throughout the day has been outstanding. Your support has played an important role in enabling these students to engage in this world-class scientific experience and proudly represent Australia among the next generation of global innovators. We look forward to keeping you updated as judging begins.
