As the ISEF experience draws to a close, the AUSSEF team embraced one final American tradition — sport. The team attended the WNBA game between the Phoenix Mercury and the Chicago Sky, and what an experience it was. Whether students followed basketball or not, everyone was swept up in the atmosphere of the evening. From cheerleaders, mascot antics, Chinese dragon dancing, and DJ entertainment, to basketball acrobatics, flashing wristbands, waving team towels, crowd giveaways, and fan competitions, the energy inside the arena was unforgettable. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to experience another aspect of American culture together and celebrate the conclusion of an extraordinary week.
Today marks the beginning of our journey home. After such a busy and exciting schedule, the team welcomed a slower start to the day as suitcases were packed and repacked to safely fit project posters, awards, memorabilia, and the many keepsakes collected throughout the trip. However, the most valuable things we take home are not the physical items, but the friendships formed, the experiences shared, and the memories created together. Most importantly, the students return home with a deeper understanding of the important role they can play, not only within Australia, but as contributors to the global scientific community. The growth in confidence, professionalism, and aspiration shown by every finalist throughout this experience has been remarkable.
